The best way to care for your children is to for yourself

I know what it’s like when you’re juggling grief and solo parenting. Sometimes it feels like you never get a moment to breathe, let alone care for yourself. That’s why I created this retreat—a weekend where everything is taken care of for you. No childcare worries, no cooking, no cleaning… just genuine time for you to reconnect, recharge, and simply be.

reconnect, recharge, and simply be

Imagine spending a weekend at Matlock in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales where nature, comfort, and care come together.

Self-Care, Finally: Enjoy deeply relaxing, trauma-releasing yoga, meditation, and journaling that help ease the weight of everyday life.

Real Connection: Share your journey with other widowed parents who understand exactly what you’re going through.

Non-stop fun and action for the kids: As well as having family fun, kids also get to be adventurous – think zip lines, rock climbing, kayaking – all safe and supervised.

No Hassle Childcare: Forget about finding someone to watch the kids. We’ve got it all covered.

I truly believe that when you take care of yourself, you create a better space for your children to flourish too.

“ I really enjoyed this weekend with Orla. She has such a calming effect and I loved the opportunity to connect with others sharing in hope and wonder after such tragedy. My girls loved the activities!  ”

“  Orla expertly balanced adult and children’s time. I recharged knowing the kids were safe, happy, and fully engaged. ”

“  An amazing opportunity for my daughter and me to step away and be among families who understand.

Safe & Supervised: With age-appropriate activities and dedicated, caring staff, your children are in great hands.

Location location!

Tucked away in the heart of Matlock, our venue is surrounded by lush green landscapes and gentle hill walks, offering a safe, quiet haven to relax and reconnect with nature.

Away from the hustle and bustle, this is your chance to truly unwind.

The venue is simple yet charming—a child-friendly, hostel-style setup with private ensuite rooms for each family. We all share meal times together in a big open canteen with views of the hills nearby.

This is not your 5* luxury abode, think of it like a grown-up sleepover with bunk beds, where practicality meets a touch of playful nostalgia for you and your kids.

Food – it’s all about the kids. Child friendly food, hearty and filling. Don’t you think that everything is always so much more delicious when you don’t have to cook it or do the dishes either.

Your Experience...

Imagine a weekend where you can finally catch your breath.

While your children find themselves laughing and bonding with other kids who share their unique experience, you’ll have plenty of time to relax, practice soothing yoga and meditation, and enjoy heartfelt conversations with other adults who truly understand.

There’ll be shared moments too—family yoga, crafting sessions that nurture a sense of belonging, and even campfire marshmallow toasting.

There will be time for the children to explore their adventurous side with activities such as rock climbing or zipping down the zip wires.

It’s all about finding that perfect balance—time for you to recharge, for your kids to forge new friendships, and for everyone to come together, supporting one another as you navigate life’s challenges.

My story and my "why"

I get it—solo parenting after losing a partner is an incredibly tough journey, and I’ve been there myself. In my own darkest moments of grief, I yearned for a safe space to relax, connect, and be truly understood as I felt so alone and overwhelmed as a solo parent holding not just my grief, but our son’s too. That’s exactly why I created Wids & Kids Weekend.

Since 2018, as I’ve navigated the chaos of solo parenting, I’ve realised just how rare—yet essential—it is to carve out time for self-care. This weekend isn’t about perfection; it’s about giving you a well-deserved break so you can recharge and be the best parent you can be in these very difficult circumstances. No matter if you’re new to grief or have been on the path for a while, this retreat meets you exactly where you are.

Every family that’s taken part has experienced the nurturing, understanding atmosphere—and left feeling lifted and hopeful.
